Pickpockets don't just randomly grab at your pockets. They use sophisticated distraction techniques to divert your attention.
One common method is the "Fake Tourist" approach where someone asks for directions while their accomplice steals from you.
Another technique is the "Spill Trick" where someone spills something on your clothes, and while helping you clean up, they or an accomplice pickpockets you.
The "Crowd Push" is also popular, especially in busy metro stations where thieves create artificial congestion to bump into you and steal your belongings.
So how did I manage to travel through these pickpocket hotspots without becoming a victim? I had a strategic approach!
First, I invested in anti-theft gear. This included a slash-proof backpack with hidden zippers and RFID-blocking technology to protect my credit cards.
I also practiced the "dummy wallet" technique where I carried a decoy wallet with expired cards and a small amount of cash, while keeping my real valuables in a hidden money belt.
Never keeping all my valuables in one place was another crucial strategy. I distributed cash, cards, and important documents in different secure locations on my body and in my luggage.
